S1000D is an international specification for the procurement and production of technical publications. It is an XML specification for preparing, managing, and publishing technical information for a product.
Initially developed by the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) for use with military aircraft1, S1000D has grown to be widely used around the world. It uses a Common Source Database (CSDB) to manage and publish technical information for various industries, including aerospace, defense, and civil aviation.
Adopting the S1000D specification helps manufacturers reduce the cost and complexity of technical documentation production. Although it emphasizes its use for technical publications, the specification can also be applied to non-technical publications, providing processes and controls beneficial to businesses.
